Rowan Cheshire wins halfpipe gold in World Cup event in Calgary

Rowan Cheshire, 18, became the first British female skier to win a halfpipe gold at a Freestyle Skiing World Cup event.

Cheshire scored an 80.40 in her first run to secure her first podium finish in a World Cup event. The event in Calgary, Canada, was the third of four events in Freestyle Skiing halfpipe.

Cheshire currently sits second in the International Ski Federation list, and must remain in the top 24 in order to qualify for the Sochi Olympics. The team will be announced on the 22nd of January.

To complete the podium Virginie Faivre from Switzerland finished second with a score of 79.80, and Australian, Amy Sheehan finished third with a score of 79.20.

In the men’s event Canada blitzed the podium with Justin Dorey finishing first with a score 87.20, Noah Bowman, second with a score of 84.40, and finally Matt Margetts, third with a score of 82.60.

GB’s other finishes were Emma Lonsdale, with a career best tenth, with a score of 64.60 in the woman’s. In the men’s, Murray Buchan finished 13th with a score of 62.20, and James Machon finished 16th with a score of 58.20.

The final halfpipe Freestyle Skiing World Cup event will take place in the United States at Northstar on 10 January.
